City Hall at Mall brings government to Mesans

Mesa will hold its fourth City Hall at the Mall at Superstition Springs Center on Saturday in an effort to "bring city government directly to residents," city representatives said.

"City Hall at the Mall is a terrific way for Mesa residents to learn more about the numerous services we offer and meet the city staff," City Manager Chris Brady said. "They will get a chance to pick up information on everything from museum exhibits to what items can be recycled to opportunities to volunteer with the city."

This is the second year that the City Hall at the Mall has been held. The event is held twice annually - the other event is held in the spring at Fiesta Mall.

"City Hall at the Mall started because we wanted to bring local government directly to the residents," said Kevin Christopher, Mesa public information and communications specialist. "We provide easy access to locals about the resources we offer. The mall is the perfect place to hold it since people are always there."

City departments will have displays set up in the center court area of the mall to provide the public with information.

Participating departments are Police, Fire, Channel 11, Economic Development, Neighborhood Services, Library, Mesa Arts Center, Arizona Museum for Youth, Arizona Museum of Natural History, Public Information and Communications, City Manager's Office, City Council, Solid Waste, Transportation, and Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities.

Melissa Buxton, senior marketing manager for Superstition Springs Center and Fiesta Mall, said she received positive feedback about past City Hall at the Mall events.

"People love having city information at their fingertips," Buxton said. "A lot of people are familiar with the city of Mesa's Web site, but City Hall at the Mall gives them the opportunity to speak directly with the people and staff connected to the city."

The police and fire departments will have displays of a police helicopter, a K-9 unit, a SWAT Team armored truck, an emergency command van, a fire engine, and the rapid response unit.

The Transportation Department will be displaying the new Valley Metro Link bus, which will run directly from the Sycamore Transit Center to Superstition Springs Center starting Dec. 27.

Representatives of Superstition Springs Center will provide information about upcoming events at the mall. Shoppers will be able to hear about Kids Club, Doggie-Palooza and Macy's 150th anniversary.
