Gilbert will host a "Free Shred-a-Thon" over the weekend to help Valley residents prevent identity theft.

A diesel-powered paper shredder will be available between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday at Houston Avenue and Gilbert Road for anyone who wants to safely rid themselves of old documents. Each person is limited to five boxes of unwanted paperwork.

The Gilbert Police Department will join the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and Iron Mountain Records management for the event, which will also host VIN etching and enrollment in the "Watch Your Car" program. The program provides car decals for vehicles not normally driven between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. - a high-traffic time for stolen vehicles. Any car with the decal can be stopped by a police officer within those hours to verify vehicle ownership.
