East Valley briefs: Grand Canyon’s Hoffman sets school swim marks

Gilbert High School graduate Caitlin Hoffman won the 100-meter backstroke in 1 minute, 01.92 seconds and set Grand Canyon University marks in the 100 butterfly (1:02.82) and the 100 breaststroke (1:41.91) Saturday at the PCSC Pentathlon, hosted by Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif.
Hoffman placed 12th in the butterfly and 15th in the breaststroke, and added a 13th-place finish in the 200 IM (2:19.31).
The women’s team finished 10th overall in the event, which was won by Pepperdine.
NBA ALL-STAR GAME
• Two thousand volunteers are needed for the 2009 NBA All-Star Jam Session that will take place in Phoenix.
The Jam Session is a five-day interactive basketball event preceding the NBA All-Star Game at US Airways Center. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and be available Feb. 11-16 for at least two consecutive days for one four-hour shift. For more information, visit www.nba.com/jamsession.
