Scottsdale briefs: Recycle discarded electronics Saturday

Instead of putting discarded electronics in the trash, recycle them safely while protecting the environment 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in a city-sponsored collection day, city officials announced.
Bring discarded electronics to the parking lot between the Corporation Yard and the police facility at 91st Street and San Salvador Drive.
Officials said the event allows these discards to avoid being placed in a landfill where hazardous or toxic elements they contain could leach into the environment.
Instead these items go to an electronics recycling contractor who refurbishes or disassembles them for recycling or for the resale of useful parts, officials said.

McDowell preserve photo exhibit opens
Get a view of the desert from inside the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in a photographic exhibition now open at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd.
The exhibit features the work of winners of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Photo Show. Artists from the local community captured the natural beauty of the McDowell Mountains in submitting their best shots to the contest, designed to promote conservation, city officials said in a statement.
The exhibition, part of McDowell Sonoran Month, runs through Nov. 6.

Model trains on display in Railfair
Displays of model trains and exhibits as well as many fun activities for children will be on hand 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday in Railfair 2008 at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, 7301 E. Indian Bend Road, city officials announced.

Crime prevention and shredding event Saturday
The Scottsdale Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit is hosting a free event from 9 a.m. to noon today in the rear parking lot of Scottsdale Bible Church, 7601 E. Shea Blvd.
Some of the services included are document shredding, free vehicle identification number etching and car seat installation demonstrations and inspections by the Scottsdale Fire Department.
