If one Halloween per year just isn't enough, Mesa has good news: The city's downtown merchants are manufacturing a mini-Halloween a full 21 days before the real deal arrives; Nightmare on Main Street is Friday.
The free, outdoor event offers three reasons to slip into a costume ahead of schedule, including trick-or-treating for children, a costume contest for all ages, and Arizona Museum of Natural History's a "Night at the Museum." Based on the 2006 Ben Stiller movie of the same name, the museum will offer guests reduced admission and the chance to dress as a historical character from the movie.
Nightmare on Main Street is part of the downtown area's Second Friday events, when merchants, artists and entertainers rally around a single theme one Friday per month to lure residents outdoors for food, music, activities and shopping.
Two more Second Fridays are scheduled through the end of the year. Taste of Main will highlight downtown eateries on Nov. 14, and a Dec. 12 Art Market on Main will focus on the holidays.
NIGHTMARE ON MAIN STREET
Mesa's Halloween-themed Second Friday is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday along West Main Street, roughly between Country Club and Mesa drives. Some merchants and vendors will host live bands or psychic readers, or offer food and merchandise specials. Mesa Contemporary Arts, the gallery at Mesa Arts Center, will offer free admission. Other events are outlined below. Admission to Nightmare on Main Street is free, and coupons for participating merchants can be printed online. TRICK-OR-TREATING AND COSTUME CONTEST
Merchants will hand out goodies to children in costume, and a costume contest for all ages is 7:30 p.m. at 101 W. Main St.
HORROR FILM FESTIVAL
An assortment of scary movies will begin 8 p.m. at 101 W. Main St. A bonus: Big Brain Pictures, a local independent filmmaking team, will give horror movie makeup demonstrations.
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
The Arizona Museum of Natural History, at 53 N. Macdonald, invites residents to dress as a favorite historical character from the Ben Stiller movie "Night at the Museum." From 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., admission is just $4-$6.
WINDOW CONTESTS
Stroll past downtown's decorated stores, and vote on your favorite.
DISNEY PRINCESSES
An assortment of costumed Disney princesses will sing and do face-painting at Mrs. Potts Tea Party, 264 W. Second St.
