Arizona State quarterback Rudy Carpenter, nursing a left ankle injury suffered during Saturday’s game at California, will not practice on Tuesday, coach Dennis Erickson said during the Pac-10 teleconference.
Backup Danny Sullivan will assume the first-team snaps.
“We’ll see how Rudy is on Wednesday and Thursday,” Erickson said. “I need to see some good movement, need to see a lot of things before he plays in that game.”
The Sun Devils, losers of three straight contests, visit eighth-ranked Southern California this week.
Carpenter — who has made 36 straight starts, the second-longest streak in the nation — suffered what has been diagnosed as a non-weight-bearing projection of a bone in his ankle. The ailment is similar to a sprain.
“I feel good,” Carpenter said during a Monday press conference, where he wore a walking boot. “I’m sure everyone has questions about my foot. I don’t know what’s going to happen … as far as the game on Saturday.”

USC is the kind of team that will deliberately injure a quarterback to get him out of the game. If Rudy is hurt now…
