Shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, a Phoenix police officer on patrol at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport saw a man riding a bicycle near the west economy parking lot.

Thinking the man appeared suspicious, officer Fred Stuart drove next to him and told him to stop so they could talk. The man, identified as Jason William Engels, refused to stop even after the officer turned on the overhead lights on his car. Engels, 27, tried to ride through a small passage way in the south block wall of the parking lot, but fell off of the bicycle and fled into the parking lot. Stuart chased him on foot.

After entering the parking lot, Stuart saw that Engels was holding a handgun. At one point, Engels pointed the weapon toward Stuart, who fired one round at the Engels. Engels, who was not hit, dove under a vehicle, slightly injuring his shoulder. He was hiding under a vehicle when the Stuart and other officers who responded to assist found him. They told Engels to throw the gun out from under the car, which he did before being taken into custody. He faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Police said after recovering Engels’ weapon, the determined it had a class three malfunction, which indicates that Engels tried use it against Stuart.
