Germaine opts out of Utah contract

Former Mesa Mountain View quarterback Joe Germaine has opted out of his contract with the Arena Football League's Utah Blaze and hopes to sign with the Arizona Rattlers.

"I think I owe it to my family to even see if that's an opportunity," said Germaine, who has lived in the Valley the last six years.

Germaine said he has had preliminary conversations with the Rattlers, but that no contract terms were discussed. The Rattlers could not be reached for comment.

A clause in Germaine's five-year contract with Utah enabled him to opt out if Danny White was no longer the coach. White resigned on June 30 and was replaced by assistant coach Ron James. Germaine said that wasn't the reason he triggered the out clause; he simply wanted the chance to be closer to his family.

"Obviously it would be great," Germaine said. "I think the Arizona franchise is headed in the right direction. I know the head coach there (Kevin Guy) is one of the better coaches in the whole league. They have great players there."

Germaine led the Arena League in 2007 with 5,005 passing yards. He also threw for 107 touchdowns, second-best in the league.

The Rattlers have two quarterbacks on their active roster: Lang Campbell and Jeff Smoker.
