Paradise Valley Community College cross-country runner Hailey Hanna, a Mesa Mountain View High Schoolgraduate, picked up Tribune athlete of the week honors for her fourth-place finish in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference championships last week.

Hanna ran 3.1 miles in 20 minutes, 10 seconds, but her team finished fourth, one point behind Mesa Community College and Central Arizona, which tied for second.

"Hailey ran a very good race, but she'll be a lot better than that when it counts in November," PVCC coach Dave Barney said in a news release.

The Paradise Valley men's team finished first, placing five runners in the top seven in the championships and easily outpacing Central Arizona.

George Alex, Tailhar Hasson, Jeremy Sudbury, and Eric Harasyn finished second through fifth, while Aaron Sherf finished seventh, but all were within seven seconds of each other in the 8-kilometer race.

"We ran a very strong race," Barney said, "but Central is a much better team than we saw today. I don't think that we've seen the last of them."

The PVCC men are ranked sixth in the nation in NJCAA Division I.

MARSHALL, WALWORTH CITED BY ACCAC

Simone Marshall and Jessie Walworth, both members of the Paradise Valley women's soccer team, were named player and goalkeeper of the week, respectively in the ACCAC for their efforts in wins over Cochise and Pima community colleges.

Marshall scored a goal in the Pumas' 2-0 win over Cochise, while picking up a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over Pima.

Walworth stopped two Cochise shots and then had seven saves in the win over Pima.

Paradise Valley is ranked 12th in the NJCAA, its only loss coming to eighth-ranked and undefeated Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

The Chandler-Gilbert women's soccer team continued its winning ways last week, moving to 11-0 with a 2-0 win on the road over Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday. The score was the same as when the two schools played earlier this year. ...

The Mesa football team lost a close game to Phoenix College on the road 27-24 on Saturday, while Scottsdale Community College fell to Arizona Western College 28-14 in Yuma.

LOOKING AHEAD

Today: Chandler-Gilbert volleyball at Mesa, 7 p.m.

Saturday: Scottsdale football hosting Snow College, 7 p.m.; Chandler-Gilbert women's soccer hosting South Mountain CC, 7 p.m.; Scottsdale volleyball hosting Eastern Arizona, 7 p.m.
