Suns forward Amare Stoudemire was poked in the right eye by center Boris Diaw at Wednesday night’s practice and returned to Phoenix today to be examined by team opthamologist Jay Schwartz.
Stoudemire suffered a partially torn iris, but there is no damage to the retina or the cornea. Stoudemire did have significant swelling and blurred vision so he skipped today’s workout. He will also miss tonight’s workout but Suns officials hope he can return to practice Friday.
Stoudemire may have to wear goggles when he returns. Suns trainer Aaron Nelson said Stoudemire has talked to him in the past about wearing goggles full time to avoid these types of injury.
Nelson said former Suns forward Bo Outlaw had almost the same thing happen to him and he wore goggles for the rest of his career.
Stoudemire’s availability for Friday’s scrimmage is in question. If he misses it, it will be the third time in the past four years he has missed the scrimmage. In 2007, he had arthroscopic surgery on his knee and in 2005 he had microfracture surgery on his knee.
Stoudemire had just returned from an ankle sprain Wednesday when he suffered the injury.
There was no update on guard Leandro Barbosa’s status. Barbosa flew home to Brazil earlier this week to be with his ailing mother. The Suns do not expect him back before next week, at the earliest.
