Charter schools fined for asbestos violations

The Associated Press

Six Phoenix-area charter schools have been fined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for failing to follow rules designed to prevent children from being exposed to asbestos.

Five of the schools didn't inspect their buildings for asbestos before opening for business. All six failed to develop required asbestos management plans.

The schools include the Valley Academy and Horizon Community Learning Center in Phoenix, Paradise Education Center in Paradise Valley, Happy Valley School in Peoria, Edu-Prize Charter School in Gilbert and Challenge School in Glendale.

The schools are now in compliance and no asbestos was found. They were fined from $800 to $2,400.

Breathing asbestos fibers causes lung diseases, including cancer.
