Representatives from police and fire departments across the Valley attended the 11 a.m. service, showing their support for the family and friends mourning Scott’s death.
“It’s a very sad day for our department,” Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris said.
“It’s a tremendous loss for all of us.”
Scott was taken to a local hospital after collapsing in a charity boxing match Sept. 16.
He died Sept. 20.
The 100 Club of Arizona, a nonprofit organization that raises money for families of law enforcement officers who are injured or killed in the line of duty, held numerous boxing matches at Fort McDowell Casino. Scott collapsed during one of the charity events in a match against a Chandler firefighter.
Scott, a husband and father, was a veteran of the Iraq war. A group known as the Patriot Guard Riders gathered on motorcycles to attend the service Saturday. Members held American flags along the pathway from the parking lot to the church, while officers stood honoring Scott.
Jeff Schops, an Arizona ride captain of the Patriot Guard Riders, said they come out for “all military personnel,” to salute them one last time.
“We are here to honor our fallen police officer,” he said.
Scott’s ceremony did not include an official police procession because he was not killed in the line of duty, said Cindy Scott, a spokeswoman for the Phoenix Police Department.
Officers and firefighters from departments around the Valley attended the ceremony before the funeral procession continued to the Phoenix Memorial Park where Scott was buried.
The Maricopa Medical Examiner’s Office determined the death to be accidental, though it was caused by a strong blow to the head, according to medical reports.
Spectators of the charity boxing match said head protection was used during the match.
A bank account for Scott’s family was created at Bank of America.
Donations can be made to Scott’s wife and child through the “Officer Barry Scott” account.
Scott was a relatively new officer at the Phoenix Police Department.
Harris said Scott’s commitment to service was evident in his work. This was “more of a loss for our community,” he said
