Teacher's license revoked after sex conviction

Mike Sakal, Tribune

The Arizona Board of Education has unanimously voted to revoke the teaching certification of a former Scottsdale Chaparral High School science teacher because of his recent conviction for having a sexual relationship with an underage female student in the early 1980s.

The state board voted 11-0 during the disciplinary actions portion of its meeting on Monday to revoke the teaching certificate of Paul Knutson, who taught at Chaparral from 1973 to 1984, according to Vincient Yanez, executive director of the Arizona Board of Education.

In June, Knutson, 59, was sentenced to two months in a Maricopa County jail, lifetime probation and 400 hours of community service for having a sexual relationship with a female student between 1984 and 1985, according to Maricopa County Superior Court documents. The girl was 16 and 17 years old at the time Knutson had the relationship with her, according to court documents.
