Suns forward Amaré Stoudemire will be limited to begin training camp after spraining his left ankle for the second time this summer in the offseason during a voluntary workout two weeks ago with his teammates.

Stoudemire, who originally suffered a Grade II sprain of the ankle in July, visited ankle specialist Dr. Richard Ferkel as a precaution in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Ferkel, who did the recent surgery on the ankle of San Antonio star Manu Ginobili, took his own MRI and concurred with the Suns medical staff that there was no further damage than a sprain.

Suns head trainer Aaron Nelson said Stoudemire has “made a lot of improvement” over the last two weeks and even took part in one scrimmage last week before the decision was made to be more cautious.

“We just want to make sure he’s ready to go before we give him a full workload,” Nelson said.

Suns general manager Steve Kerr said the initial plan is for Stoudemire to take part in the noncontact (morning) session of two-a-days and sit out the evening scrimmages when the Suns begin training camp in Tucson on Oct. 1.

The Suns held their final voluntary scrimmage on Wednesday and several players have planned a light workout Thursday before taking the final weekend of the offseason to relax. The annual media day is Monday at US Airways Center, with the team departing for Tucson later in the afternoon.
