Cards notebook: Offense comes out firing against Miami
Mike Tulumello, Tribune
Looks like Kurt Warner got his way, for one week at least, on how the Cardinals’ offense approached the game.

Cardinals passing game clicks against Dolphins
The Cardinals came out firing the ball, in contrast to last week, when they took the air out of it (at least until Warner lobbied for a more wide-open approach at halftime at San Francisco).
The team’s coaching staff felt after studying the Dolphins’ defense that they’d be able to hit big plays in the passing game.
And they hit two early: a 79-yard touchdown to Anquan Boldin and a 75-yard pass to Larry Fitzgerald.
“If it requires us to throw the ball to win, if that gives us the best option, then that’s what we’ll do,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “I thought our matchups were very good today.”
Warner said, “I love the fact that last week we were able to run the ball and control the clock, and this week we were able to explode.”
Which approach does he prefer?
“I like throwing it.”
WILSON A RECEIVER?
For the second straight week, Whisenhunt lined up defensive players on offense.
Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and safety Adrian Wilson both spent time at receiver; “DRC” did so last week at San Francisco, as well.
Wilson’s role Sunday was to block a linebacker.
“I lobbied for it,” Wilson said. Alas, according to the coaches, “I messed it up,” Wilson said.
Wilson was supposed to stay on the linebacker, but he said he saw another defender coming, so “I had to come off that guy and go to the next guy.”
Wilson said he’d never played on offense before.
“I hope they don’t go away from it. I’m available.”
THE BETTER WAY
If he had to pick between one stat or the other, Whisenhunt said before the game that he’d prefer for the Cardinals to have zero turnovers than have his defense create turnovers.
“We’ll win more games if we just don’t turn the ball over on offense.”
He got his wish. Neither team turned the ball over, and the Cards won in a rout.
STAT NOTES
• Edgerrin James became the 14th player in NFL history to reach 15,000 scrimmage yards (rushing and receiving).
• Anquan Boldin had his 22nd career 100-yard receiving game, tying him with Jackie Smith for most in team history.
His 79-yard catch was the team’s longest pass play since 2002, when Jake Plummer connected with Marcel Shipp.
• Warner completed his first nine passes.
Add in the final four passes he completed the previous week, and he had 13 straight completions, the third-longest streak in franchise history.
Also, Warner now has 42 300-yard games in his career.
INJURY UPDATE
Three Cardinals suffered injuries, but none appeared to be serious.
Cornerback Rod Hood had a neck problem, while cornerback Eric Green had a left calf strain but returned to the game. Tackle Levi Brown had a left knee strain but said afterward that he was OK.
EXTRA POINTS
Running back J.J. Arrington once again was inactive. … Dolphins fan Johnny Depp attended the game.
