A 10-year-old student was killed Thursday morning when a soccer goalpost at Rio Colorado Elementary School in San Luis, Ariz., fell on him and another student, San Luis police said.

The second student, also a 10-year-old boy, was being treated Thursday at Yuma Regional Medical Center for what police called a non-life-threatening head injury.

The boys, both fourth-grade students, were playing in the area of the goalpost during recess about 7:30 a.m. when it toppled, Police Capt. Javier Nuño said.

Both boys were rushed by ambulance to YRMC, where one of the two died from a head injury, police said. The other boy was listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

The accident remained under investigation Thursday. Police said they had no immediate details about what caused the goalpost to fall on the students.

The names of the two boys were not released by police nor by the Gadsden Elementary School District.

"This was a tragic incident, our prayers and thoughts are with the children's families," said Nuño.

Gloria Torres, a member of the Gadsden district's governing board, said the district was investigating the accident and would have no comment to make Thursday about the accident. She said the district superintendent, Ray Aguilera, would make a statement today (Friday).

San Luis Fire Department personnel who responded to the accident scene also treated a teacher for what Fire Chief Hank Green described as shock. The teacher had stabilized one of the boys until firefighters arrived.

"This teacher did the right thing by making sure the child wasn't moved and by keeping his airway open," said Green.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Detective Johnny Vidrio at 341-2420.
