If you enjoy performing arts, there’s no such thing as “nothing to do” this coming year.
No matter where your tastes lie, there’s something going around the Valley this season for you. Controversial “Spring Awakening,” which won multiple Tony Awards, is playing at Gammage Auditorium. A legendary rock and roller and his performance artist wife will be at Chandler Center for the Arts. A two-person play about e-mail scams is set at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and the Phoenix Symphony will perform a concert with music from the James Bond films.
Of course, there’s plenty of Shakespeare, opera, ballet, puppet shows and kid shows; the esoteric (a play about Britney Spears running for president from Progressive Theatre Workshop); and the conventional (lots of “Nutcrackers,” of course, this holiday season).
So take a look at these listings, and if you’re craving a more intimate look, check out the Get Out Performing Arts Expo — where many of these groups will be on hand, performing this Saturday. It’s free, which makes it a perfect starting point for those who are intimidated by the whole theater experience. It’s like a tasting menu of the satisfying treats that local performing arts groups are offering in the near future.
Be warned, though; performing arts can be kind of like Pringles, as these listings will attest. You can’t stop at just one.
