Eric Byrnes received positive results from an MRI exam on his left hamstring Tuesday but said he has come to the realization that he will not return this season, as the Diamondbacks have feared since his June injury.
“Practically, I can’t look at this year,” Byrnes said.
“It is not a very realistic option. I’d love to play this year. But the other thing is, it’s not my call. That’s for the doctor and the team.
“The bottom line is I’ll be here the next couple of years. Those are very important for me and for the team. I have to make sure I come to spring training 100 percent.
“I have to be cautious and not jeopardize the next couple of years.”
Byrnes does expect to get some at-bats in the Instructional League, which runs through the end of the month in Tucson.
“I’m confident I’ll get there at some point,” he said.
“I had 600 at-bats last year. I had 200 this year, and probably not one healthy. I need to get back in the swing of things.”
Byrnes ran on a piece of exercise apparatus Wednesday but said he has not been cleared to run on the field for a couple of weeks.
He suffered a hamstring injury in spring training that never completely healed, and he was diagnosed with a 1 ½-centimeter tear in his left hamstring after being forced out of a game June 30.
