The Cardinals have gotten through training camp, plus three exhibition games, healthy.
That means about their only health concerns are the same ones they entered camp with: whether center Al Johnson and defensive tackle Gabe Watson would be ready for the season’s start.
Cards need kicking game to improve
Both are coming back from knee surgery.
Watson is expected to start practicing next week, giving him a chance to play in the opener, Sept. 7 at San Francisco.
But Johnson doesn’t appear on track to make it. That means Lyle Sendlein, who filled in for Johnson for 2 1/2 games last season, will start at center.
“Lyle has gotten enough snaps with the first unit,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “He’s gotten better and better each week.”
Because of his experience as a rookie last year, “This opening game against San Francisco won’t be a trauma for him.
“I think he’ll be prepared. I think he has confidence because he has been playing well. That makes it a lot more comfortable for us.”
POSITION BATTLES
Elton Brown continues to challenge Deuce Lutui for the starting right guard spot.
Regardless of who is named the starter, “We certainly would feel comfortable putting the other guy in there. We’re lucky because we have enough depth we’re able to do that,” Whisenhunt said. “Both guys played well in the game this past week.”
But the game at 7 p.m. Friday, at home vs. Denver, also will be part of the evaluation.
On defense, Travis LaBoy — the team’s key offseason free-agent acquisition — is coming on strong and may overtake Bertrand Berry at linebacker/defensive end. Both players, however, will see plenty of playing time.
