A postal worker is facing up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine after stealing gift cards from the mail while he was working at a U.S. Postal Service branch in Scottsdale, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Richard Allen Jones, 44, of Cave Creek, was charged with four counts of mail theft after a four-count indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on Wednesday, the agency said.

From July 2007 to March 2008, Jones would sort mail and steal letters containing gift cards to purchase items for himself while working at the Kachina station, 7339 E. Williams Drive, in Scottsdale, according to the indictment. During a search of Jones’ residence, agents found more than 100 stolen gift cards and pieces of mail, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
