A Phoenix prosecutor is trying to determine whether convicted ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy did anything illegal while officiating Phoenix Suns games.
Maricopa County attorney Andrew Thomas is seeking files from the FBI investigation into Donaghy, who was sentenced in July to 15 months in prison in a gambling scandal.
Speculation has swirled around a pair of Suns game against the Los Angeles Lakers in April and May of 2007 that were officiated by Donaghy, who has pled guilty to two felony counts alleging he took payoffs from gamblers.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is trying to determine whether Donaghy broke any Arizona laws while officiating those games.
Thomas originally asked for access to the information in August 2007 but said he was denied because the case was ongoing. Now that Donaghy has pled guilty, Thomas has sent a follow-up letter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn, N.Y., seeking the information.
