Dunn's first Arizona homer powers Diamondbacks

Adam Dunn showed off his standard offensive arsenal on Tuesday in his home debut with the Diamondbacks, and it netted the desired results.

Dunn went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a pair of walks — and yes, a strikeout — to lead Arizona to a 7-6 win over the San Diego Padres in front of 24,739 fans at Chase Field.

Brandon Lyon gave up three runs in the ninth inning and departed to boos from the crowd with runners on the corners with one out, but Tony Pena came on to get the save.

“It was good,” said Dunn of his home debut. “I was just kind of glad to get it out of the way.”

It was Dunn’s first home run in seven games with the club and tied Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard for the National League lead at 33. His two walks give him 90 for the season, tops in the majors. Dunn has also struck out 127 times this year.

“It was nice to be able to, in front of the home crowd, hit a home run, get on base, do what he does,” manager Bob Melvin said.

The Diamondbacks (65-60) seemed to be cruising to the win, but Lyon was hit hard. He hadn’t pitched in six days, so he entered the game although it wasn’t a save situation, a spot where he’s struggled this year.

“I don’t think he’s the kind of guy that needs the emotional lift or the adrenaline of a save situation,” Melvin said. “He just didn’t get through it in the fashion he would’ve liked.”

Pena got Nick Hundley to hit a bouncer back to him and Adrian Gonzalez was tagged out in a rundown after breaking toward home. Luis Rodriguez flied out to center field to end it.

Doug Davis (5-7) struggled early but found enough of a groove to last six innings, giving up two runs.

The Diamondbacks regained sole possession of first place in the NL West as the Dodgers lost to the Rockies.
