Two men were indicted Monday on charges related to the July 11 theft of Surprise police Chief Dan Hughes’ badge, uniform, gun and unmarked police SUV from a fitness center.

Kevin Michael Kern, 30, and Edgar Vargas, 18, are accused of stealing the property from a locker Hughes used at the Mountainside Fitness Center at 15417 W. Bell Road.

According to a police probable cause statement, the codefendants are alleged to have cut the locks off two lockers and removed their contents, including credit cards and car keys, in addition to the police gear. They are also accused of stealing two vehicles from the fitness center’s parking lot.

The indictment contains three counts of burglary, two counts of theft, two counts of theft of a credit card, two counts of theft of means of transportation, and one count of forgery of credit card.
