FLAGSTAFF - The Cardinals didn't have a morning practice on Tuesday, but here are a few news and notes from coach Ken Whisenhunt, who talked at lunchtime:
Backup guard Carlton Medder has a fracture in his left elbow stemming from an injury he suffered during a one-on-one drill Monday afternoon. He's in a splint and will be out of any contact drills for four weeks, when he will be re-evaluated.
It makes an already skinny depth chart along the offensive line even thinner. Tackle Brandon Keith, the team's seventh-round draft pick, will move from tackle to guard, which is a tough transition for a lineman, let alone a rookie who hadn't seen much time in the interior line.
Whisenhunt also spoke of the dynamic between having so many backups and young players forced to move up on the depth chart because of injuries, which could lead to more mistakes in the early going.
Conversely, Whisenhunt spoke of his desire to see receivers Lance Long and Steve Breaston in game action. With Anquan Boldin out because of a hamstring injury, Breaston will line up opposite Larry Fitzgerald Thursday against New Orleans. The rookie Long has impressed coaches in practice while vying for the fourth or fifth wideout spots.
Whisenhunt also praised the work of kicker Neil Rackers, who Whisenhunt said has had a strong training camp while working with new holder and sixth-year pro Dirk Johnson.
The Cardinals will practice from 3:15-5:15 p.m. today, but it was raining and thundering as of 1:30 p.m. so we'll see if they have to move indoors to the NAU Skydome. If so, it would only be for the second time thus far.
