Brandon Kelly of Payson, the No. 1 seed at the 84th Arizona Amateur Championship, posted a 3-and-2 first-round victory over No. 64 seed Cyrus Whitney of Oro Valley Wednesday at Troon Country Club in Scottsdale.
Steven Hakes of San Diego, the No. 2 seed, also advanced, defeating No. 11 Ellison Keomaka of El Mirage in 19 holes. No. 3 Nathan Norris of Willcox easily dispatched No. 62 Motomasa Isogaya of Mesa 6 and 5, while No. 4 Gary Quinn of Anthem posted a 5-and-4 victory over No. 61 Terry Beels of Phoenix. Both the round of 32 and the quarterfinals will be played today.
Also, former Cardinal and 49er quarterback No. 35 Tim Rattay of Anthem defeated No. 30 Brad Nicholson of Chandler, 3 and 2.

The Professional Bull Riders circuit hits Glendale on Friday and Saturday for the Built Ford Tough Invitational at Jobing.com Arena. The top 45 bull riders in the world are expected for the event at 7:50 p.m. Friday and 6:50 p.m. Saturday.
