Police are searching for a man who posed as a police officer Tuesday and knocked on a Mesa apartment claiming someone who lived there was in a car crash.
The imposter is described as white, in his mid 20s to early 30s, about 5 feet 10 inches and 180 pounds with brown eyes and short black hair. He was wearing a short-sleeved navy blue police uniform with a leather gun belt containing a radio, handgun, ammunition pouches and a can of pepper spray. The police badge was silver.
Police said the man knocked on the front door of an apartment located at 1800 E. Covina, near Gilbert Road and University Drive, about 8:30 a.m. When the resident answered the door, he was met by the imposter, who asked the resident to identify himself.
The resident told the stranger his name, but the imposter then asked for the man’s wife’s name and claimed she had been in a car crash.
Police said the imposter then walked away and when the resident called his wife, she told him she hadn’t been in an accident.
The man was seen getting into a white Ford Crown Victoria with a spotlight on the driver’s side door, a red dome light on the dashboard and tinted windows. Police said it’s possibly a 2001 model or later.
Mesa police passed out flyers letting the community know about the imposter. An updated flyer with the composite will also be handed out, police said.
Police ask anyone with information to call (480) 644-2211 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
