Owings opened the season by winning his first four starts, but had not won since May 25 and was 0-6 with a 6.87 ERA in his nine starts after that.
Yusmeiro Petit will take Owings’ spot in the rotation and start Saturday in Los Angeles.
Petit pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Owings on Monday and has given up three runs in 17 innings – two starts, two relief outings – since rejoining the D-Backs on June 27 when Edgar Gonzalez went on the disabled list.
Peguero was 5-4 with four saves and a 4.42 ERA in 41 appearances at Tucson. He had 60 strikeouts in 59 innings.
