The Arizona Cardinals shored up their depleted tight end position today by signing rookie free agent Brent Miller to a one-year contract.
Miller is a former Arizona State player and Phoenix native who prepped at Phoenix Desert Vista High School. In 47 career games with the Sun Devils (22 starts), he caught 43 passes for 526 yards and five touchdowns. As a senior in 2007, he caught 22 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown.
His younger brother Zach was a Sun Devil teammate from 2004-06 and is now the starting tight end for the Oakland Raiders.
Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt indicated Tuesday he was concerned about the tight end position because they had been working with only four healthy players at the position. That includes Leonard Pope, who is coming off a serious ankle injury that cut short his 2007 season.
“When you’re short at that position, working the two-tight end sets like we do, I’m afraid if camp progresses that those guys are going to wear down.”
To make room for Miller, the Cardinals waived tight end Troy Bienemann, who had missed all of camp with a recurring toe injury.
