A 2-year-old girl died Friday afternoon at Banner Baywood Medical Center after she was pulled from her family’s east Mesa swimming pool.
Mesa Fire Department Capt. Jeff Stieber said paramedics were called to a home near McKellips and Power roads about 12:45 p.m. and found parents doing CPR on a toddler who was unconscious and not breathing.
The little girl was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Stieber said the pool at the house was fenced and that officials are still investigating how the child ended up in the pool. Police said the pool fence was self-locking and self-latching.
The child’s parents were home at the time of the drowning and told officials they hadn’t seen the girl for about five minutes before she was discovered in the pool.
Three other children, who are relatives of the girl and ages 2, 5 and 7, were also at home at the time of the incident.
“One of the other children apparently notified the mom that the child was in the pool,” Stieber said.
