Boldin says he won’t re-sign with Cards

Anquan Boldin no longer wants a new contract with the Cardinals.

In fact, he’d just as soon see Arizona in his rearview mirror.

Saying he was promised a new deal before training camp and suggesting he feels burned, Boldin said Thursday he has instructed his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to stop negotiating with the Cardinals.

“I was promised a deal would get done before this season. But the season is here and obviously it hasn’t happened,” Boldin said. “Right now ... I don’t want a deal. People may think I’m being funny or just saying that just to say it.

“But for me, I’m just tired of it. I’ve washed my hands of the whole situation.”

Boldin indicated he would play out his contract, which has three years left at $8.25 million, and then leave.

He said he hasn’t asked for a trade, but asked Thursday if he’d prefer one, Boldin said, “Honestly, I don’t know right now. I can’t answer that.”

A Cardinals spokesman indicated general manager Rod Graves would have no comment on the matter. In the past, club officials have indicated they made Boldin an offer late last season.

Boldin said his unhappiness does not stem from the fact that fellow Cards receiver Larry Fitzgerald received a new four-year, $40 million deal in the offseason.

Boldin has already had a contract reworked once. He renegotiated his rookie contract in July of 2005, agreeing to a four-year, $22.75 million extension that included a $13.255 million signing bonus.

There are still three years left on that deal, but Boldin believes his performance warrants another contract extension.

“I’ve earned it,” Boldin said. “My numbers speak for themselves.

“They even came out publicly and said I outplayed my contract. I don’t have to argue to anybody or make a case to anybody about why I’m deserving of a new contract. That’s self-explanatory.”

Coach Ken Whisenhunt, left to handle this hot potato on the day before the first practice of training camp, said, “I’m sure Anquan is frustrated. But I don’t think it changes anything from the standpoint of what we feel about Anquan or what we’ve said all along.

“We are sensitive to the fact he wants a new contract. We’ve tried to address it. The first chance we get, we’re going to continue to try to do that.

“Hopefully, we’ll go forward and everything will go smoothly.”

At the same time, he cautioned that the Cardinals will try to spend their money in a way that can build a champion.

“You have to be cognizant of that, as far making sure you have enough players and how you do your salary cap... We can’t do that at the expense of our team.”

The contract dispute shouldn’t affect how Boldin plays, Whisenhunt said.

“When you talk about professionals, Anquan is one of the ultimate professionals. I don’t anticipate that changing. We’ll see as we go forward.”

Boldin, though unhappy, agreed, saying, “I’m a football player. That’s what I do for a living. ... When I step on this field, I play with passion, play with emotion, play with everything I have. That won’t change.”

EXTRA POINTS

Boldin’s cap number, which counts the signing bonus, is $13.25 million for the next three years. ...

The Cardinals all passed their conditioning tests on Thursday. They twice ran 300 yards, with players at different positions assigned varying times. Among the standouts were rookie defensive end Calais Campbell and second-year receiver Steve Breaston. “They’re in good shape,” Whisenhunt said. “That’s a good thing for our first practice (this morning).” ...

In addition to the three players who were listed earlier as unready to go at the start of camp, Whisenhunt added the name of tight end Troy Bienemann, who has recurring toe problems. The previously announced injured players were defensive tackle Gabe Watson (knee), defensive tackle Kellen Dykes (quad) and linebacker Monty Beisel (back). ...

The Cardinals are hoping that the increasing number of first-round signings will hasten a deal with their top pick, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
