Mayor decides against putting slots at airport

The Associated Press

PHOENIX - Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon has decided against putting slot machines at Sky Harbor International Airport as a way to boost declining city revenue.

American Indian tribes worried the move would lead to the legalization of gambling at racetracks and bars and would cannibalize their gambling income.

Gordon had called for one or more tribes to operate slot machines at the airport. The tribes would have shared revenues with Phoenix and the state.

But the mayor has since assured Maricopa County's tribes that he won't pursue the proposal.

Allowing gambling at Sky Harbor might void a 2002 gaming compact, eliminating rules that limit the number of casinos, gaming tables and slot machines that the tribes are allowed to have.
