Kurt Warner is unlikely to reach an agreement on a contract extension with the Cardinals before the start of training camp, his agent suggested on Tuesday.
Negotiations slow between Cards, Rodgers-Cromartie
Training camp to begin as Cards head to Flagstaff
“That’s what I would guess,” said the Chicago-based Mark Bartelstein.
And that would mean the veteran quarterback might well play out the remaining year of his contract with the Cardinals and then become a free agent.
Warner has said he wanted a deal done by the start of training camp so that negotiations don’t interfere with football.
The negotiations are more complicated than in most deals because any contract would follow two tracks, depending on whether Warner ends up as the backup to Matt Leinart or as the starter. Leinart enters camp this week as the starter.
“We’d love to get something done,” Bartelstein said. “But once he starts playing, he’ll focus on playing.
“It’s disappointing we haven’t been able to get anything done.”
But, Bartelstein added, “He’s under contract. He’s going to go play his heart out.”
The only other contractual matter remaining is that of Round 1 draft pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Coach Ken Whisenhunt, however, has indicated he thinks the Cardinals are close to reaching a deal with the cornerback from Tennessee State.
