Boldin, Dockett expected at start of Cards camp
Mike Tulumello, Tribune
The Cardinals should have almost everyone ready to go when training camp starts, including receiver Anquan Boldin and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett, coach Ken Whisenhunt says.
Cardinals sign second round pick
Cardinals season-ticket holders staying on board
Boldin and Dockett, who skipped the voluntary off-season workouts because they want bigger contracts, are expected to be at camp by the Wednesday afternoon reporting time.
But Whisenhunt suggests the leadership roles of the two have been damaged.
“It definitely compromises their leadership ability when they’re not here in the off-season program. That’s one of the big times when that’s so valuable.
“I don’t think they can really view themselves as leaders as much when they’re not here in off-season.”
Boldin was one of the team’s offensive captains last season, while Dockett considers himself the leader of the defensive line.
At the same time, the coach said both players are professionals who understand their jobs.
“These guys at this level are so competitive that they want to win. That takes precedent most of the time.
“I expect them to be here and participate like they normally do.”
From an injury standpoint, Whisenhunt expects everyone will be ready to go except defensive tackle Gabe Watson, who is recovering from a fractured kneecap.
Also, Whisenhunt thinks there’s a good chance the team will come to terms withfirst-round choice Dominique Rodgers-Cromartieby the time camp starts. Second-round pick Calais Campbell agreed to terms on a four-year deal on Monday.
The Cardinals will meet in Flagstaff Wednesday night, have a conditioning test Thursday and start practicing on Friday.
