Former Arizona State football coach Bruce Snyder has told friends he has cancer and will enter a Tucson facility for treatment.
Snyder issued a statement through the university's sports information office confirming that he has the disease, though he wasn't specific about the kind or severity of his condition.
In the statement, the 68-year-old former coach said he appreciates the public support, but he also asked for privacy.
Snyder coached at ASU from 1992 to 2000, compiling a 58-47 record. He authored one of the Sun Devils' greatest seasons ever when ASU finished 11-1 in 1996 and came within 100 seconds of beating Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and possibly winning the national championship.
Current ASU coach Dennis Erickson, who has known Snyder for 25 years, said he was stunned to learn Snyder has cancer.
"It's unfortunate, but you know Bruce. He's a battler," Erickson said. "He'll do whatever he has to do. All you can do is wish him the best."
