The Cardinals have until Tuesday to sign linebacker Karlos Dansby, who has been designated the team’s franchise player, to a long-term contract. Kirk Wood, Dansby’s agent, said Monday he doesn’t expect a deal to be completed.
“I don’t think it’s going to happen,” Wood said.
Though the two sides likely will talk one last time today, “There’s a very significant difference in the two business positions. ... We’re quite far apart.”
That means Dansby will make about $8 million for this season. The Cardinals could repeat this process for one more season before Dansby becomes an unrestricted free agent.
The other matter facing the Cardinals is signing their top draft picks before training camp starts next week.
The Cardinals already have signed their Rounds 4-7 picks and seem to be closing in on their Round 3 selection.
“I expect him to be in camp on time,” agent Joel Segal said of receiver Early Doucet.
Signing first-round pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, a cornerback, and second-round pick Calais Campbell, a defensive end, could be trickier. That’s because contract language is expected to be complicated because of unresolved issues regarding the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
The Cardinals are set to report to training camp on July 23. A team meeting is set for that night, with a conditioning test set for the next day.
Practices, which are open to the public, begin July 25.
