D-Backs notes: Webb says he likely won't pitch in All-Star game

Jack Magruder, Tribune

PHILADELPHIA - Brandon Webb was so good again Sunday that the rest of the baseball world may not get to him in the All-Star game.

D-Backs hit break on down note

Tracy on a tear at plate

Webb had hoped for a big lead and an early departure Sunday, but he threw 108 pitches in seven strong innings to severely diminish his chances to pitch Tuesday.

"There's probably not a real good chance of me throwing," said Webb, who was selected to the All-Star game for the third consecutive season but pitched only in 2006.

"Maybe in an emergency. We'll see how I feel tomorrow. It's probably not very likely."

Webb said he planned to speak to manager Bob Melvin about it.

The D-Backs would rather Webb get the full benefit of the All-Star break and have been in contact with NL All-Star manager Clint Hurdle about the situation.

Webb, 13-4 with a 3.23 ERA, has thrown 131 innings this season, third in the NL behind Sunday opponent Cole Hamels and Aaron Cook.

Webb finished one victory short of the D-Backs' franchise record for victories before the All-Star break. Randy Johnson was 14-2 in 2000 and Curt Schilling was 14-3 in 2002.

POST-BREAK ROTATION SET

The D-Backs will start the post-All-Star break portion of the season the way they began it in 2007, with Doug Davis making the first start against Los Angeles on July 18.

All-Stars Dan Haren and Webb, in that order, will follow Davis, Melvin said.

Davis opened the second half of 2007 against San Diego and did his best work from that point, running off six consecutive quality starts and winning his first five decisions as the D-Backs coped with the loss of Randy Johnson.

Webb would have six days off if he does not pitch in the All-Star game. Haren, who is almost certain to pitch Tuesday, made his last start Thursday in Washington and would be well-rested.

IBANEZ STAYING PUT?

Although the D-Backs have spoken to Seattle about left fielder Raul Ibanez, Mariners manager Jim Riggleman said Sunday he does not anticipate any major transactions.

"We aren't going to move people just to move people. Our high-profile guys aren't going to go anywhere unless we are overwhelmed. I hope Raul (stays) here. He is such a professional," he said.

Ibanez leads the Mariners with 55 RBIs while hitting .273 with 11 homers.

SHORT HOPS

The D-Backs have tentatively scheduled Chris Snyder (testicular fracture) to play in a rehab game for Triple-A Tucson at Tacoma on July 18, after which he would rejoin the D-Backs from the disabled list either Saturday or more probably Sunday. The D-Backs set his rehab game for Friday, their first game back, because they also want him to participate in their team workout Thursday at Chase Field. ...

Justin Upton, who missed the final five games of the road trip with a rib-cage muscle strain, is uncertain if he will be able to return when play begins Friday. "At this point, we're still working on it. We'll see what four days can do and evaluate then," Upton said. ...

Chris Burke had his second three-hit game of the season Sunday in Upton's place, all singles, raising his batting average 20 percentage points to .188. Alex Romero was 4-for-14 with two doubles in three previous starts while Upton sat out.
