A high pollution advisory for ozone has been issued for Wednesday.
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is advising active children and adults, and people with lung disease, to reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.
This is the 11th HPA issued for ozone in 2008, tying the record, set in 2005, for most ozone advisories issued in one calendar year.
Ozone can irritate the respiratory system, reduce lung function, aggravate asthma and damage the cells that line the lungs. Repeated short-term ozone damage to children's developing lungs may lead to reduced lung function in adulthood.
Ground-level ozone pollution is caused by sunlight interacting with the many pollutants generated by automobiles, gasoline-powered lawn equipment and other sources.
