Driver injured in collision with train in Mesa

Andrea Natekar, Tribune

A woman was injured this morning when her car collided with a train on Dobson Road in Mesa.

The accident occurred just before 5:30 a.m., at the railroad tracks between Broadway Road and Main Street, according to the Mesa Fire Department. Traffic was restricted for several hours near the accident.

The train was traveling about 27 mph when it struck the car, said Mesa police detective Steve Berry, causing the female driver to be ejected from the vehicle.

“Her injuries didn’t appear to be life-threatening, which is just amazing when you see the car,” he said. “Basically it tore both doors off the driver’s side of her car . . . with all that weight, trains don’t just stop.”

The woman, who was the car’s only occupant, was taken by ambulance to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital.

Mesa police will be reviewing video from a camera that was on the train to determine details about the accident later this week, he said.
