Phoenix added unrestricted free agent David Hale and also re-signed Matt Jones. Both received two-year, one-way contracts. Financial terms were not immediately available.
The Coyotes also re-signed right wing Brian McGrattan, acquired last month in a trade with Ottawa, to a one-year deal.
Hale, 27, is a four-year veteran who has spent time with Calgary and New Jersey. In 58 games with the Flames last season, he recorded two assists, 46 penalty minutes and had a plus-minus of zero.
"He's a strong-bodied, good-skating defenseman that I think really hit his stride last year in the NHL to become a regular," Phoenix general manager Don Maloney said.
"I think he's just starting to mature into his position."
The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Hale is a plus-17 for his career and takes great pride in his defense.
"I got some more opportunities on the penalty kill (last season), which I feel is a role I'd like to take on more," he said.
Hale, who has 11 assists and 175 penalty minutes in 215 NHL games, has been to the playoffs in each of his seasons in the league and is confident his streak can continue.
"There's a lot of talent (in Phoenix)," said Hale, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo. "There's some All-Stars there, and I think the team is growing. I think we've got a legitimate shot at the postseason this year."
Hale will be reunited with Jones, a teammate for two seasons at the University of North Dakota.
Jones, 24, appeared in the Coyotes' first 30 games last season but played in only 15 after that and was a healthy scratch 34 times. He finished the season with two assists, 10 penalty minutes and was a minus-13.
"Once he realizes how good he can be, he's going to be a good one," Maloney said. "I think with Matt, confidence is a big part of his game. When he's confident, he's an NHL player. When he's not, he's a guy that sits out. We have to continue to help him believe in himself."
McGrattan, 26, recorded three assists and 46 penalty minutes in 38 games with the Senators last season.
Maloney said "in all likelihood" the Coyotes will carry seven defensemen to start the season. Joining Hale and Jones will be Ed Jovanovski, Derek Morris, Zbynek Michalek, Keith Yandle and the recently signed Kurt Sauer.
The signing of Hale all but signals the completion of the Coyotes' shopping in the unrestricted market.
"I think we're satisfied where we are now," Maloney said.
"Right now we're trying to fill out our minor league team a little more, give us a little more depth in certain positions. Overall I don't think we're going to be terribly active anymore looking for unrestricted players."
Phoenix will also turn its attention to signing its two remaining restricted free agents, forwards Daniel Carcillo and Joel Perrault.
LOOSE PUCKS: The Coyotes also signed minor league right wing Francis Lessard to a contract. The 29-year-old tough guy played in 91 games with the Atlanta Thrashers from 2001-06 and recorded four points and 268 penalty minutes.
Phoenix extended its affiliation with San Antonio of the American Hockey League through the 2010-11 season.
