D-Backs' Byrnes could be out rest of season
Matt Paulson, Tribune
Has left fielder Eric Byrnes played his final game this season?
Trouble Brewing for Diamondbacks
That may very well turn out be the case after manager Bob Melvin revealed Wednesday that the Diamondbacks and Byrnes are currently giving serious consideration to the possibility of surgery to fix his injured left hamstring. A decision on the matter isn’t expected for about a week, but if Byrnes does elect to go under the knife, he will be shut down for the year.
“I think you’re looking at four to six months (of recovery time) for that type of thing,” Melvin said.
For now, Arizona is simply monitoring the injury.
“We’re still trying to figure out how severe it is in there and how far the tendon is off the bone,” Melvin said.
Byrnes previously missed 25 games this season with tears in both hamstrings.
He hasn’t been available for comment since injuring himself again while attempting to steal third base Monday.
Melvin said Byrnes is currently getting as many opinions as he can concerning the injury.
“Whether the MRI is sent somewhere else to get looked at or whether he physically goes, I’m not 100 percent sure yet, but there will be a lot of eyes on this one,” Melvin said.
AWARD WINNER
For the second time this year a Diamondbacks hurler has been named the National League pitcher of the month.
Dan Haren joined Brandon Webb (March/April) on Wednesday, winning the award for June after going 3-0 with a league-leading 1.32 ERA, 36 strikeouts and just eight walks in six starts. Arizona was 2-1 in the games in which he received a no-decision.
“The thing I’m most proud of is how I pitched on the road after the struggles I had earlier,” said Haren, who was 1-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four road starts in June after going 0-3 with a 5.25 ERA in his first four outings away from Chase Field.
NO SURGERY NEEDED
Catcher Chris Snyder was scheduled to have surgery Wednesday to repair his left testicular fracture, but that decision was called off.
“I guess however they do those things, that they just came to the conclusion he didn’t have to have the surgery,” Melvin said.
The timetable for Snyder’s return (just after the All-Star break) remains the same.
SHORT HOP
Third baseman Mark Reynolds didn’t start after taking a pair of hard grounders off his chest and his left wrist in Tuesday’s game. Reynolds had an MRI on the wrist but no fracture was found. He pinch hit for first baseman Chad Tracy in the seventh inning and remained in the game, making his first major league appearance at the position.
