D-Backs notebook: Snyder placed on DL
Matt Paulson, Tribune
The Diamondbacks' list of walking wounded continued to grow Tuesday when catcher Chris Snyder was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left testicular fracture.
He will have surgery today.
Woes continue for D-Backs, Johnson in 8-6 loss
The injury, suffered Monday when he was hit by a foul ball, was discovered when Snyder underwent an ultrasound prior to Arizona's 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
"We're hopefully looking at the 15-day period where he's back after the All-Star break," manager Bob Melvin said.
To fill Snyder's spot, Arizona recalled Robby Hammock from Triple-A Tucson. Miguel Montero started at catcher Tuesday.
Snyder was hitting .246 on the season with seven homers and 33 RBIs. In 28 games with the Sidewinders, Hammock hit .315 with four home runs and 16 RBIs.
Snyder joins pitcher Edgar Gonzalez (strained elbow) and left fielder Eric Byrnes (hamstring), who was officially added Tuesday, on the DL.
MORE MEDICAL NEWS
Conor Jackson started in left for Byrnes and to fill his spot on the active roster, the D-Backs selected the contract of right-handed reliever Connor Robertson from Tucson and added him to the 40-man roster, which had one opening.
The move left Arizona with only 12 position players, one short, but was necessary because the bullpen is banged up and had been relied on heavily lately, Melvin said.
"We're a little thin," he said.
The move also allowed Arizona to save Yusmeiro Petit, who will start today in place of Micah Owings, who continues to nurse a groin injury. Owings will simply skip a start as he continues to recover.
Robertson (5-2, 3.86 ERA in Tucson) replaced Randy Johnson with two outs in the fourth inning and retired the first eight batters he faced.
Byrnes, who was unavailable for comment, underwent an MRI on Tuesday and Melvin said, "It's going to be a while."
Relievers Gonzalez and Juan Cruz (inflamed oblique) also had MRIs. Cruz should be available today, Melvin said.
SHORT HOP
Daniel Webb, a 12th-round pick by the D-Backs in last month's draft, is having an impressive summer pitching for his travel team, the Southern Illinois Bullets. The 18-year-old right-hander from West Paducah, Ky., lost for the first time Tuesday at the World Wood Bat Association tournament in Georgia, but he was consistently hitting 92-94 mph with his fastball, according to his father, Champ. Coming into the tournament, Webb was 3-0 with a 0.47 ERA in four starts.
