Sting won’t participate in 2009 lacrosse season

The Arizona Sting, a member of the indoor National Lacrosse League, has informed the league that they will not participate in the 2009 season, the second straight year they won’t be in operation.

All of the team’s players, who were loaned to other teams last season, were selected in a dispersal draft on Monday. Forward Dan Dawson, a three-time All-Star, was picked first overall by expansion Boston.

The Sting are owned by the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes.

FUNERAL SERVICES

• Funeral arrangements have been set for former Arizona Republic sports writer Bob Eger, who died recently at his home in Phoenix.

The viewing and service will take place today at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Parkway. The viewing will begin at noon while the service will begin at 1 p.m.

A reception will be held in Eger’s honor immediately following the service at the Bill and Judy Schaefer Arizona State Athletics Hall of Fame, located in the lobby of the Carson Center at the south end of Sun Devil Stadium.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Eger’s honor may be made to the Bob Eger Memorial Fund to support Packard Stadium Renovations, by checks payable to the “Sun Devil Club” and sent to the Sun Devil Club, Bob Eger Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 872205, Tempe, AZ, 85287-2205, or by calling (480) 727-7700.

ASU FOOTBALL

• ASU senior quarterback Rudy Carpenter and senior running back Keegan Herring have been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, the award presented to the outstanding collegiate football player. Sun Devils senior safety Troy Nolan has been named to the Bednarik Award Watch List, awarded annually to the nation’s top defensive player.

CARDINALS

• The Arizona Cardinals hired Tom Reed as head athletic trainer Monday. The 37-year-old Reed comes to Arizona from the Atlanta Falcons, where he spent the last nine seasons as an assistant athletic trainer.

• Frys.com Open tournament director Scott Reid announced Monday that tickets are now on sale for the 2008 PGA Tour event to be played Oct. 22-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.

Daily general admission tickets are available for $25, and a weekly general admission ticket can be purchased for $50. Children 17 and younger are free when accompanied by an adult.
