Byrnes headed back to DL with hamstring strain
Eric Byrnes was placed back on the disabled list after straining his bothersome left hamstring, subduing the emotion in the clubhouse after a 6-3 win over the Brewers on Monday at Chase Field.
Byrnes pulled up after attempting to steal third base in the second inning.
“That’s just tough luck,” Mark Reynolds said. “It sucks for him, to work as hard as he did with rehab, and it seems like it’s happened to him again.”
Doug Davis threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and three runs but finally picking up a win after having nothing to show for three straight solid outings.
Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin pulled him with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, resisting the urge to keep Davis in the game to control his own destiny.
Chad Qualls walked in a run to cut the Diamondbacks lead to 5-3, but struck out Rickie Weeks to end the threat.
“If there was any time that I thought about going a little farther with Doug based on what’s happened the three games previous, that’s one, but you have to take the emotion out of it,” Melvin said.
Mark Reynolds went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs.
The Brewers scored two runs in the first inning, but Arizona acame right back with two of its own in the bottom of the inning.
In the fifth, Conor Jackson drove in two runs with a single and Reynolds followed with an RBI double for a 5-2 lead.
Brandon Lyon shook off a blown save on Sunday with a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 20 chances.
The Diamondbacks (42-41) avoided dropping below .500 for the first time since the third game of the season and stretched their NL West division lead to 3 1/2 games after the Dodgers lost to Houston.
