By drafting Stanford center Robin Lopez Thursday, the Suns made it clear they are operating under the same delusion that plagues many of their fans: that this group of players can still win an NBA title.
Bordow: Suns needed a starter, not a role player
Suns draft center Robin Lopez in 1st round
Lopez may fill an oft-mentioned Suns deficiency (interior defense) if he can stop NBA-caliber players, but he has no offensive game and that will become painfully apparent when Steve Nash, Shaquille O’Neal and Grant Hill have moved on to greener pastures.
He’s a role player on a team that needed to add more.
The good news? When Nash’s and O’Neal’s contracts come off the books in two years, general manager Steve Kerr will have plenty of money to spend on a strong free agent class to try and cover up this mistake.
