BOSTON - Eric Byrnes is back, with what he believes is a full set of tools.
Haren, D-Backs outduel Beckett, Red Sox
Bordow: Schilling deserves spot in Hall of Fame
Byrnes was activated from the disabled list Monday after missing 25 games, and while he went 0-for-5, he plans to get back to his old self when the opportunity presents itself.
“I plan on running if I get on base, given the right situation,” said Byrnes, on the disabled list since May 27.
“I didn’t necessarily have that in my bag before I went on the DL. By the time I went on the DL, I could barely run.”
Asked if he was 100 percent, Byrnes said: “Just about,” adding that he will continue his maintenance program to attempt to ward off further injury.
“Hopefully he has all his weapons and can do some of the things that he wasn’t able to do before he went on the DL,” manager Bob Melvin said.
MUTUAL RESPECT
Dan Haren got to know Josh Beckett at the 2007 All-Star game and was impressed.
“I respect him a lot as a baseball player, and now that I know him, respect him more as a person,” Haren said.
“He has unbelievable stuff. If you ask the guys in there, you don’t see that kind of stuff too often — 95-96 (mph) consistently with action and a ‘12-6’ breaking ball. It is fun going against him. If I were to pick, I wouldn’t pick him to go up against. I’d rather face a No. 5 guy.”
Haren faced Johan Santana twice and Tim Lincecum once this season before meeting Beckett, saying “this is no different. Every pitch is a grind. Every run is at a premium.”
WEBB WINS DECISION
Webb’s ERA dropped from 3.40 to 3.23 Monday without him throwing a pitch when the commissioner’s office overruled a scoring decision that cost him two earned runs in New York on June 11.
Luis Castillo originally was given an infield single on a chopper hit back to Webb in a three-run fourth inning of a game the Mets won, 5-3, in 13 innings.
Webb was given a throwing error when a runner on first took an extra base.
The hit was taken away Monday and the play simply ruled an error, making the final two runs of the inning unearned.
SHORT HOPS
Alex Romero was optioned to Triple-A Tucson when Byrnes was activated. ... Boston’s Kevin Youkilis was removed from the game when he was struck in the right eye while attempting to field a one-hop throw during infield warm-ups before the D-Backs batted in the fifth. Brandon Moss then made his first career appearance at first base, because backup Sean Casey opted to serve his three-game suspension for his part in an on-field incident June 5 with Tampa Bay. Moss misplayed a grounder on which Mark Reynolds scored the D-Backs’ second run.
