East Valley briefs: ASU to play in Anaheim Classic

The 2008 Anaheim Classic men’s college basketball tournament field was finalized on Friday. Joining Arizona State are Baylor, Cal State Fullerton, Charlotte, Providence, St. Mary’s, Texas-El Paso and Wake Forest in the tournament from Nov. 27-30 at the Anaheim (Calif.) Convention Center.

Three of the schools (Baylor, Cal State Fullerton and St. Mary’s) participated in the 2008 NCAA tournament, while ASU and Charlotte played in the NIT. ASU (No. 12), Baylor (No. 21) and Wake Forest (No. 25) are currently ranked in an ESPN summer top 25 poll.

BASKETBALL

• President Bush will honor the 2007 Mercury on Monday for winning the WNBA title during a ceremony at the White House. The ceremony will take place at 8 a.m., Arizona time .

TRACK & FIELD

• Three East Valley athletes just missed out on qualifying for the Junior World Championships on Friday at the 2008 USA Junior Track & Field Championships at Columbus, Ohio. The meet is for athletes ages 14-19. The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Junior World meet in Poland, provided they have met the qualifying standard.

Hannah Carson, a 10th-grader-to-be at Mesa Dobson High School who is competing for the Arizona Cheetahs track club, placed third in the women’s javelin with a throw of 163 feet, 5 inches.

Bryce Lamb, another member of the Cheetahs who will be a senior at Chandler High, was fourth in the long jump at 24-3/4.

Arizona State freshman C.J. Navarro was fourth in the women’s discus at 161-8, while ASU’s Nectaly Barbosa had the top time in the preliminaries of the men’s 1,500 meters at 3:50.92.

The finals take place June 20-22 at Ohio State University.
