SPECIAL REPORT: Tribune looks into sexual misconduct in schools
The Higley Unified School District governing board accepted the resignation of Scott Zemojtel, 32, at a meeting Thursday night.
He was escorted from class by school officials April 17, two days after the school became aware of the situation.
He was accused of having sex more than 20 times with a girl who was 17 years old when the relationship began. He will not face criminal charges. Police said the student, now 18, refused to assist them in the investigation.
Zemojtel and the student met at the beginning of the school year when she started his class, police records show.
The relationship developed during class exercises in which students turned in written journals and the teacher would write comments back.
After a few entries, the two agreed to meet in September, and by mid-October, they were having sex, records show. The relationship lasted until March.
The student told police they had sex at Zemojtel's home. They had sex four times while she was still a minor, records show.
