Today's the deadline for critics of Gilbert Mayor Steve Berman to file petitions for a recall election. End Corruption in Gilbert, a political committee formed by Gilbert resident Fred Phillis to campaign for Berman's recall, had until today to submit 981 valid signatures to force a special election in November.

"We'll be filing tomorrow," Phillis said Wednesday. "I can't give you a count at this point because I don't have it at this point."
Phillis said he already has enough signatures to force a recall, however.
He filed paperwork forming the anti-Berman committee Feb. 13.
The petition filed that day to begin the recall campaign stated: "By his behavior - and by placing his personal interests above the interests of the public - Gilbert Mayor Steve Berman has conclusively demonstrated that he is unfit to hold public office."
If the group files the petitions by 5 p.m. today, an election will be scheduled within 90 days. Phillis' group has not announced a candidate to run against Berman.
