Scottsdale man among dead in plane crash
Mike Sakal, Tribune
Federal Aviation Administration officials are investigating the cause of a plane crash that killed two men on Friday, including one from Scottsdale who was on a scenic tour over Canyonlands National Park in Utah.
Gary Kramer, 49, of Scottsdale, was a passenger in a Cessna 172 that crashed about 10:30 a.m. in a remote area of the park, which is between Monticello and Moab in eastern Utah, said Lt. Monte Dalton of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.
The plane was piloted by John Keys, 66, of Moab, who also was killed, Dalton said.
The plane, which was owned by Red Tail Aviation, departed from the Canyonlands Airport in Moab, and a witness saw the plane in distress about 10:15 a.m. and reported it, according to Dalton.
The plane broke into several pieces upon impact, but did not explode or burn, Dalton said.
Someone from Red Tail called authorities after the plane did not return in time, he said.
Canyonlands National Park is known for its rock formations and spirals.
