Man wanted in 4 Tempe bank robberies nabbed

A man wanted in connection with four bank robberies in Tempe was arrested Wednesday by Phoenix police.

James Whitaker, 36, was arrested about 1 a.m. at 2605 W. Van Buren. Police said Whitaker assaulted one officer and ran away after he asked the man for identification.

Tempe police said the robberies occurred at First National Bank, 125 E. Southern Avenue; Wells Fargo, 3255 S. Rural Road; Wells Fargo, 64 E. Broadway Road and Bank of America, 699 S. Mill Avenue.

Whitaker could also face charges in connection with a May 8 carjacking in the area of Rural Road and Southern Avenue.
